The San Francisco 49ers are about to part ways with former starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Several teams have been mentioned this offseason, but a surprise team is now being mentioned.
This week, ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio proposed that Garoppolo join the rival Los Angeles Rams if he is released by the 49ers. Florio stated that he would be an excellent backup for Matthew Stafford, who appears to be injured at the moment.
“As more information about starting quarterback Matthew Stafford’s elbow has become available, the question has become more pressing. It’s a baseball issue, according to reports, and the Rams appear befuddled by the situation “Florio penned a letter.
“The 49ers trading him to the Rams would be awkward, to say the least. The 49ers are more likely to release Garoppolo before Week One, making him a free agent who can sign with any team. The Rams could then try to entice him as an insurance policy for Stafford.”
Florio believes the 49ers will be forced to cut Garoppolo if they cannot find a trade partner for him. In that case, he sees the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks emerging as contenders.
In 46 games for the 49ers, Jimmy Garoppolo is 31-14 with a 67.7 percent completion rate and over 11,000 passing yards. However, his limitations were made abundantly clear to the team in their Super Bowl LIV and 2021 NFC Championship Game losses.
The 49ers are now ready to move forward with Trey Lance as their starter, regardless of whether Lance is prepared for the role, but they must first deal with Garoppolo’s $24.2 million salary.
